Try these fun, frugal Halloween decorating ideas

Try these fun, frugal Halloween decorating ideas

On Halloween night, how will kids in your neighborhood know you are one of the houses ready to hand out treats? Leaving the front porch light on is always a good indicator, but how about creating a spooktacular front yard and porch with these DIY Halloween decorations.

Your first step is deciding on a Halloween theme. Will you be the scary house kids are excited, but a little nervous to visit? Or will you be the bright and cute house perfect for kids of all ages? As usual, no matter what theme you choose, one of my favorite places to look first for decorations is the dollar store. There are so many scary spider webs, spiders, skeletons, even ghoulish door knockers to get you started. You’ll also find many sparkly and adorable signs, flags, and pumpkins.

I like to do a mix of cute and a little scary. In my front yard we have our DIY Halloween graveyard, complete with a fence and gates, tombstones, and a few ghouls. You can find all the details of how we did it (it’s easy and cheap!) at SavingByDesign.com/graveyard. We’ll also be adding a wheel barrel of bones to the graveyard this year. Just as it sounds, you fill your wheel barrel with dirt, add some plastic bones and shovel, and ta-da! You’ll have a super simple, inexpensive, and spooky front yard or porch decoration.

Our porch is full of mums, pumpkins, and cornstalks, along with a giant spider and web hanging over the door. If your porch is under cover, you can enlist the kids to help you make a huge spider using just two black balloons and black streamers. Blow up your balloons so one is a little smaller than the other for the head. Attach the balloons together and then add eight pieces of streamers to the larger balloon for the legs. A corner usually works best for this guy since you’ll need to tape the bottom of the legs to the wall so they aren’t just hanging.

Get creative and think about what you already have at home that can be used for your décor. Do you have the mini light up Christmas trees that are usually used outside on the sides of your front door? Halloween them up by adding a witch hat, material for a cape, broom, and anything else you would like to create your tiny witches. I can’t wait to try these this year!

Need to light up the path to your front porch? Here’s another super fun craft to try with the kiddos. Grab a few mason jars and orange streamers. Spread some glue on the outside of the jar (I like Mod Podge) and attach strips of streamer from the neck of the jar down to the bottom. Continue adding your strips all the way around the jar until it’s covered. Then using black cardstock, or even construction paper, cut out your favorite Jack O’ Lantern face and glue that on too. Add a candle inside and you have the perfect Halloween luminary! You can also create some mummy luminaries by wrapping gauze or cheese cloth around the outside of the jar and completing with some googly eyes found in craft stores.

Happy haunting!

How to Accessorize Your Halloween Costumes
No matter what you want to be for Halloween, of course you want to make a dramatic statement whether you want to be sexy, funny, or scary. Along with trying to make a decision, the anticipation mounts. The fun comes when you begin to change your appearance into the creature or character you have chosen. As you look in the mirror and begin to see your face change into a ghoul, a witch, or a sexy devil the excitement mounts more. Finding the perfect Halloween costume or mask to add to the excitement will be even more fun.
Before you go searching for that perfect Halloween costume all over town, start by searching online. You can find a larger variety online than you can in the majority of stores, thus you will have a better chance to find a unique costume that will be different than your neighbors. It might be very embarrassing if you both show up wearing the same costume or if you wait too long and end up wearing a dorky costume.

Of course, the costume is not the only thing you need transform yourself into the character you desire. You will need wigs, make-up, mask, or other accessories. A ghost or zombie costume will not be the same at all if you do not have a white face or a face that looks utterly dead. You could choose to go with a mask; however, masks of course do not look realistic and can take away from your Halloween costume.
Halloween makeup is also for children. Masks make it harder to see and are more of a hindrance than wearing makeup. You can find non-toxic makeup for the kids and then throw on a wig and they will not look like themselves at all. The same goes for you. You can look as sexy or scary as you desire with the right Halloween costume, makeup, accessories. Water based makeup or theatrical makeup works best.
Remember, you can always add different accessories such as jewelry, knives, chainsaws, vampire teeth, blood, or other things that will enhance the effect of your Halloween costume. No matter what type of costume you desire you will be able to find the perfect makeup and accessories to add that personal touch or that scary atmosphere.

Jackie Chan’s son Jaycee in drug arrest

Jackie Chan’s son Jaycee in drug arrest
The son of Hollywood actor Jackie Chan has been arrested on drug-related charges, Chinese state media say.

Actor Jaycee Chan, 31, and Taiwanese movie star Kai Ko, 23, were detained last Thursday, Beijing police said in a statement on their official microblog.

Police said both men tested positive for marijuana, with more than 100 grams of the drug found at Mr Chan’s home.

Their arrest comes amid an ongoing crackdown on drugs which has already netted several celebrity figures.

Gao Hu, 40, who appeared in the 2011 Zhang Yimou film “The Flowers of War”, was detained earlier this month for possession of marijuana and methamphetamines,

state media said.

‘Huge influence’

In June, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for “forceful measures” to tackle illegal drug use.

By arresting the son of one of the country’s most famous actors, the Chinese authorities are sending a clear sign that drugs will not be tolerated, reports the

BBC’s Martin Patience in Beijing.

A government anti-drug advisor told the Associated Press news agency that Chinese celebrities were being targeted because of the “huge influence” their

Beijing Municipal Anti-Drug Office deputy director Jin Zhihai however, said that police were not specifically targeting celebrities.

“If there is an increased crackdown on drugs, the number of celebrity offenders will also rise,” he told the Beijing Times on 14 August.

Last week, 42 artist management agencies in Beijing signed an agreement with police pledging not to recruit celebrities with reported drug use problems.

‘Very big mistake’

Mr Chan, whose father Jackie was named an official “Narcotics Control Ambassador” by Chinese police in 2009, had been put under “criminal detention” for the

suspected crime of “providing a shelter for others to abuse drugs”, Beijing police said.

If convicted, he faces a maximum prison term of three years.

Mr Ko, a Taiwanese actor and singer, won the best new actor award in 2011 at the Golden Horse film awards – known as the Oscars of the Chinese-language film

industry. He also won a Chinese Film Media award for his role in the movie “You Are the Apple of My Eye”.

Accused of consuming drugs, Mr Ko had received a two-week detention term, his management firm Star Ritz Productions said.

“I feel very regretful, very sorry to all the people who support me. I’ve been a very bad example, I’ve made a very big mistake,” he said in an interview

broadcast on Chinese state television on Tuesday.

Beijing police also said two other people, a 36-year-old assistant and a 33-year-old suspected dealer, were detained in the incident.

Mr Chan’s management firm M’Stones International apologised on his behalf for the “social impact” caused and said they would “supervise his rehabilitation

and help him return to the right path”.

His father Jackie has not yet commented on the incident but his publicist told the Associated Press news agency that Mr Chan had travelled to Beijing to deal

with his son’s arrest.
